Designed for singers of all levels, participants learn the fundamentals of healthy, functional vocal technique, its specific application to jazz and other styles of Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM), and how to develop a vocal practice regimen to reach short and long term goals.

Based on the principles of Jeanie LoVetri’s Somatic Voicework™, Jocelyn’s methods of vocal pedagogy address technical aspects of singing from an integrated, body-based perspective, seeking to establish freedom of movement, sensation and awareness in the throat and body in order to more openly communicate musical ideas and emotions. Topics covered include breathing, posture, registration (chest, head, mix), and tone, focusing on the development of each singer’s individual sound as specifically relevant to genres of CCM. The technique segment of the workshop will help participants develop a vocalization regimen specific to their personal goals, strengths and weaknesses, and offer resources for independent study and future advancement.

The second segment of the afternoon will incorporate aspects of musicianship (chart reading and writing, finding the best key for songs, tempos, arrangements, communicating with a band, etc.) and give singers the opportunity to work on performance skills with pianist Vardan Ovsepian.

Additional topics may include jazz interpretation and improvisation, Brazilian vocal styling, and traditional Hindustani (North Indian) sargam (sa re ga system of solfege), as a method for ear training, improvisation and melodic development applicable to any genre of music. Instructional materials are flexible and can be adapted to fit the needs of individual participants.

Due to the time limitations of the clinic, resources to aid students in their continued independent study will be provided. Singers are encouraged to bring in their own song choices (including sheet music) to be explored within the workshop setting.

Contact jocelyn@jocelynmedina.com to register and for any additional information.**
Early registration price (before Dec.15th): $55 (payment can be made through PayPal at the above email).

Bloomingdale School of Music

BSM Faculty Concert Series:

"Roots and Branches"

Faculty artist Jocelyn Medina presents a diverse program of music from India, Africa and Brazil, with the integration of these styles into her jazz-based compositions. Listeners will be taken on a cross-cultural, auditory journey through Hindustani ragas from Northern India, Ewe polyrhythms from Ghana and Brazilian Maracatu from Fortaleza, pairing each musical form with original songs inspired by these world traditions. The ensemble will feature BSM percussion faculty member Eric Phinney on traditional Ghanaian percussion and Indian tabla, in addition to a rhythm section of three of New York’s most reputable jazz musicians; Art Hirahara on piano, Evan Gregor on bass and Mark Ferber on drums. Grounded in global customs but branching into the unconventional, this concert will explore the boundaries of vocal jazz and the universal spirit of improvisation.

Program:

April Child/Maracatu, Nação do Amor (Moacir Santos)
Time and Place (Jocelyn Medina)
Raga Vrindavani Sarang (Hindustani traditional)

Translation (Jocelyn Medina)

Featuring:
